Why do we put ourselves into the path of discomfort and risk? What drives us to get too cold and too tired, to battle with fear, in the name of adventure? Loch Hourn on the Knoydart peninsula in the Western Isles of Scotland is regarded as one of the last wildernesses of Europe. Access to sea lochs is difficult. Salt water mingles with fresh water as it runs off the mountains, icy even in high summer. This mesmeric film immerses us in the physicality of cold water swimming, asking why we put ourselves in the path of discomfort and risk; why does the search for adventure take us to ever more remote and inhospitable places?

Alastair Humphreys is an english adventurer, author and motivational speaker. After years (and years) of contemplating but never quite doing any running this short film is the one that tipped the balance and got me to run.  I do not run every day or even every week but when I do, I always always feel amazing afterwards.  A friend said to me once that after you get used to and it over the 'huffing and puffing' you 'just begin to sail.'

A mini-documentary showing the link between mental health and sea swimming. Katie swims off the rocks of Penzance, UK nearly everyday of the year. Swimming has helped her overcome some of the struggles that life all too often throws our way. The hope is that her story may help others who are faced with similar challenges.
