SEASONAL YOGA

Seasonal yoga is a practice of working with mother nature as opposed to at odds from her.  We learn how to adjust our behaviour in and out of our yoga practice to align ourselves to the season we are experiencing.

The way our world in the west works today compared to way it worked 200 years ago is very different indeed.  Working alongside nature was the way we purely existed, we ate what was available depending on the season, we slept & woke when the sun & moon allowed us too and our everyday lives and energies revolved around being in harmony with nature as much as we could.  We lived as if we were part of the whole symbiotic relationship with the earth and those that live on it.

Nowadays we spend a lot of time whizzing around the world not taking a moment to take absorb what is really going on around us with a constant inner dialogue nattering away in our brain.

Basically, our monkey minds have taken over and we've forgotten how to tune in...

Seasonal Yoga is a really wonderful way to re-engage and re-connect with nature.  Through our physical Asanas (postures) we work on stimulating the Meridians or 'energy lines' for the organs linked with the time of year.  We learn that feeling a certain way physically or emotionally could in fact be down to the season we're experiencing.  We consider things like the foods we eat, the activities we do and even the thoughts that we have.  It's a wonderful concoction of traditional Chinese teachings, yoga & nature.
Once you start to look into what each season means for you, as a human being, on this planet, things make a whole lot more sense!  You can begin to put in practice working with mother nature as opposed to against her bringing about a calmer mind, more peaceful body and overall better feeling of being part of this wonderful world.

THE THEORY OF THE FIVE ELEMENTS

The theory of the five elements in traditional Chinese medicine is a concept used to explain the connection with the human body and mind and nature.

Each season brings with it an array of symptoms, diagnosis, colours, foods, organs, elements and more importantly, energies.

As we move through each cycle we can clearly see the interconnectedness of each season and how energy is passed along in a complex co-dependant ecosystem.  All you have to do is pay attention to a nearby tree and notice how it changes throughout the year.

Through a seasonal yoga practice you can align your whole being with the season you are experiencing at that moment. Please visit the section on each season to learn more.
